Whether you’ve always been a workout-at-home person or have made the shift in this past year, it can feel difficult to know what to do and how to get in a killer workout at home. But, honestly, it isn’t as difficult as you’d think. Working out at home can be incredibly affordable, effective, and incredible with just a few simple at home workout tips.ย
For me personally, I used to be a total gym girl. In fact, it shifted from being a healthy choice to a very unhealthy habit. To break my gym addiction, I had to quit cold turkey. Instead, I have found the at home workouts are so much better for my mind and my happiness!
I truly have adapted my workout routine to be 100% gym-free.
No more swapping sweat, fighting for equipment, running into exes when I’m looking less than incredible (yikes!), and, best of all, NO MORE GYM FEE.
Truth be told, you can get just as good of a workout in (or better) through an entirely at home workout.
I want to share with you my best at home workout tips and at home workout equipment favorites for a killer at home workout!
This post is all about at home workout tips.ย
At Home Workout Tips
1. Find Your Space
Whether it be in your bedroom, family room, or outside on your lawn or deck, it is so important to find a space that works for your workout.
Some important factors to take into consideration:
- Is there enough room?
- Will I be interrupted?
- Is this area safe? (No obstacles, dangerous edges/surfaces, etc.)
- Will I be making disruptive noise? (ie. If in an apartment, will you be getting noise complaints?๐)
- Do I feel distracted here?
Now, don’t take this wrong, it does not have to be difficult to find a good space for an at home workout.
However, this is definitely one of my top at home workout tips because, if your space is wrong, the workout will feel off.
Depending on the weather and house situation, I workout mainly in my bedroom, family room, or outside on my patio! All of these work perfectly in different conditions so take it day-to-day and find the best place for you to do your at home workout at that moment!
2. Find a Leader
Unless you are a workout trainer yourself (get it, girl), it can be super helpful to have someone to follow and motivate you. For me, this typically means a YouTube video. In the past, I have also used apps.
Some of my favorite apps in the past were:
- SworkIt
- Tone + Sculpt (I just love Krissy Cela)
- Nike Training Club
Now, however, I do not use an app and I take advantage of free YouTube videos instead. There are TONS of incredible YouTube fitness influencers that have amazing videos.
Some of my favorite YouTube workout leaders to follow are:
- MadFit (seriously a workout for everything you could imagine)
- Sarahs Day (my day 1 girl; LOVE her HIIT workouts)
- Pamela Reif (lots of quick and fun song challenges)
- Love Sweat Fitness (also my day 1โค๏ธ)
- Whitney Simmons
- Katie Austin
- Yoga with Kassandra
- Yoga with Adriene
Whether I’m in the mood for stretching, HIIT, yoga, cardio, or strength training, I know at least one of these fabulous ladies has got me covered.
They are super motivating and encouraging too which I LOVE!
Nothing like hearing “only 3 more!!” just when you’re about to give up, am I right?๐
3. Have Cute Workout Clothes
When you feel better, you perform better. I 100% believe that.
Cute workout clothes are sometimes the only way I get the motivation to actually move (or I just wear them around and pretend I’ve been moving. No one needs to know, right?๐).
While recovering from my ED, it has felt even more important to me to feel confident and comfortable in my clothes. It’s a mental thing but it seriously makes all the difference.
My favorite workout brands are:
- Lululemon
- Fabletics (can get 2 leggings for $24 when you sign up through this link!)
- Colorful Koala (Lulu dupes!!)
- Nike
- Adidas
- Gymshark
I also love to shop brands like 90 Degrees, Yogalicious, Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, and Champion for super discounted prices at TJMaxx.
You deserve to feel confident and beautiful in your workout clothes. I HIGHLY recommend finding a brand that makes you feel the most comfortable. This is definitely one of my TOP at home workout tips; feeling good is ESSENTIAL!
4. Motivating Music
I CAN NOT workout without music. It’s just a fact.
Whether I’m on a run or working out in my living room, I gotta have music running through my head to get my body moving.
When I’m outside, I always opt for my Beats earphones for music.
When inside, I tend to play my music through my Beats Pill.
I know that Beats are one of the more expensive brands but, truly, in comparison to other brands of headphones/speakers that I have tried, they are more than worth it. The sound quality is unmatched. As you know from my list of Splurge Items Worth Their Price, I am a huge fan of Beats equipment.
At Home Workout Equipment
Having the right at home workout equipment is another one of my MAIN at home workout tips. While you definitely do not NEED equipment to have a killer workout (Sarahs Day on YouTube has the BEST bodyweight workouts), some equipment can definitely help boost your workouts and keep them fresh and exciting.
Here are some of my own personal favorites for at home workout equipment:
1. Yoga Mat
If you are looking to get just ONE piece of workout equipment, I’d recommend a good yoga mat. I am not exaggerating when I say I use this for every single at home workout I do (not just yoga!!).
Yoga mats keep me from getting that awful scratchy carpet feeling, hurting my back on hardwood floors, or getting dirty outside!
Getting a GOOD yoga mat is so important. A good mat to me means it is the right amount of squishy yet firm and is the perfect length.
Oh! It has to be cute too!๐
My yoga mat is from Lululemon and I LOVE IT. But it is definitely a bit pricer than some. There are much more affordable options on Amazon!
2. Resistance Bands
If I learned one thing from all my years of physical therapy, it’s that resistance bands are MAGICAL.
For me, they went from a physical therapy tool to the key to a KILLER leg/booty workout. Wowza!
I like to add resistance bands when I do squats, donkey kicks, glute bridges, etc. and holy cow! The burn you get is NEXT LEVEL! It’s oddly satisfying.
Again, another very important factor in choosing resistance bands is how cute they are, obvi.๐
There’s lots of options with different prints and designs AND with different intensity levels and sizes.
Resistance bands are one of my favorite and most affordable ways to up my workout game.
3. Hula Hoop
Say hello to the funnest (is that a word?) workout you’ve ever had!
Something about a hula hoop just makes me feel like I’m 7 again… and I love it!
But I’m not sure if I’m just getting old or what because when I was 7 I didn’t remember hula hooping being such a workout! Holy moly!
Now when I hula hoop I get a good ab burn going and I get WINDED! LOL!
But, hey! It’s still fun! Working out SHOULD feel fun.
If you’re looking to make your at home workout more enjoyable, give hula hooping a try!
4. Jump Rope
While we’re on the topic of fun workouts and feeling 7 again, jump roping takes me back to elementary school recess INSTANTLY (I was the double dutch QUEEN, thank you very much). I just recently bought a jump rope and seriously caught myself smiling the entire time. It just feels so free and child-like.
That said, jumping rope is a KILLER workout. After my first day back at jump-roping, I made banana bread later that day and my arms were DEAD – I could barely mash bananas! Hahaha!
Jumping rope is good for your heart, cardio, legs (calves on FIRE), abs, arms, and HAPPINESS!
I got a super cool adjustable counting jump rope. I’ll link a similar one here!
5. Dumbbells/Weights
These are similar to resistance bands in the way they can elevate your workout with such a simple add.
I like to use lighter weights personally and do more aerobic-y exercises when I workout at home. But you can totally get heavier weights and do a full upper body day at home workout! It’s really up to you!
I actually have used these adjustable dumbbells too and think they’re a great option. They are super versatile and save you from having to buy a lighter and heavier set. You can totally customize the weight you want/need for the given at home workout of the day! They rock!!
6. Kettlebell/Med Ball
I know that a kettlebell and a med ball are entirely different things but I’m grouping them here because they are both things that I don’t personally use for at home workouts but I used to use ALL THE TIME at the gym. If you are looking to incorporate kettlebell/med ball workouts, these are a must! These workouts are complete killers and I used to do them all the time.
TBH they just haven’t been appealing to me since I started working out at home so I haven’t done them. They’re great but just haven’t been my vibe lately.
But that doesn’t mean they’re not your vibe… they still definitely deserved to be included on my at home workout equipment cause they are great workout tools!
7. Shake Weight
Now these things are freaking cool!
Bra bulge burnout – holy moly! (Not that your bra bulge needs to go anywhere girl… we all got one!)
But a shake weight is truly an upper body workout like no other. It’s honestly kind of fun too, hahah!
I feel like shake weights are not super common for at home workout equipment and I don’t know why. They are such great workout tools. I would definitely recommend checking it out if you’re looking to strengthen your upper body!๐ช๐ป
8. Exercise Ball
Exercise balls are my FAVORITE tool for my ab workouts. I love feeling like I have a powerful and strong core… to me, that is the powerhouse of my entire body. I run, walk, lift, and MOVE better when I have a strong core. The stabilization exercises that are possible with an exercise ball are perfect for achieving that strong core feeling. I love these!
9. Punching Bag
Y’all! I am DYING to get my hands on a punching bag.
This is also inspired by my girl Sarahs Day on YouTube. She is an absolute powerhouse with boxing and, since I don’t have her fiancรฉ Kurt to be my personal boxing buddy, I am DYING for a punching bag.
We just cleaned out our garage and so this is definitely coming soon to my house. I am going to be an absolute WEAPON with the boxing gloves. Just wait.
And watch out.๐
10. FabFitFun Box
I wasn’t sure if this deserved a spot under “at home workout equipment” or “at home workout tips” because it’s both!
What better way to stay motivated and prepared than a subscription box of all things fab, fitness, and fun!
FabFitFun is a subscription service that is directed towards health and fitness for women! They have the CUTEST things (and they’re ALL functional things too)!
I love, love, LOVE subscription boxes because it’s like a little forgotten gift every time it comes!
If you use this link here and the code FAB10, you can get $10 OFF your first FabFitFun box.
Don’t just take my word for it, test it out for yourself!
Treat yourself, girly. You deserve it!โค๏ธ
That’s all for my at home workout tips!
It truly is THAT simple. Working out doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. You don’t need a gym or crazy equipment… truly all you need is some space, a good attitude, and a body to move!

I also want to take a moment to remind you how important it is that you are working out for the RIGHT reasons. Working out is a celebration of our bodies… not a way to punish them or try to change them. Work out to FEEL good, not to look a certain way. I promise you, you are perfect already – just the way you are RIGHT NOW!โค๏ธ
Take care of yourself!
XOXO,

Great ideas. My at home workouts usually include dogs licking my face and kids yelling in the background.

Hahah! Can totally relate to the dog part… is it weird if I don’t mind it?๐โค๏ธ

So many great tips in your home workout read! I especially loved the part about creating some sort of sacred space, where you can have your peace and quiet. If you do this in a mindful way, this can really become a place to seek solace instead of a room you dread to enter. And I love the hula hoop idea! I remember doing this when I was younger too, and will give this one a try again, as I can definitely use some more strength in my abs! Thanks for the wonderful inspiration. Love, Susanne

These are some great home workout tips. Since everything started shutting down I’ve been trying to get my workouts in at home. It has been an adjustment since I was used to the gym. I think some kettle balls would be a great thing to try to incorporate into my routine. Thanks!
